Canadian Quality Milk Program

What is it & what does it mean?

The Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) program is a HACCP-based on-farm food safety program designed for the Canadian dairy industry by the Dairy Farmers of Canada. The goal of the program is to satisfy the consumer demand for assurance that food consumed is produced in the safest possible manner and is of the highest quality. This program provides proof to the consumer that the Canadian dairy farmers are dedicated to producing and supplying safe milk of the uppermost quality.

The CQM program is modeled on the HACCP principles that critical areas of production are identified and guidelines and plans are developed to prevent issues from arising at those points. Implementing the CQM program means producers must:

  1. Write what they do, through development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and corrective action plans;
  2. Do what they write, by implementing best management practices and staff education;
  3. Prove it, by recording, monitoring and verifying; and
  4. Improve it, by regularly reviewing and updating their plans.
